A great talent, a great person and a great announcer.
Vacation time has arrived again, and we've got a week off (as I mentioned several days ago) before the start of the all important November (*gasp* ALREADY?!) Sweeps period!

I've seriously been considering taking more than a week away from here, for a laundry list of reasons, some of which some people here know. Others that no one knows.

A little bit OOC, but not much )
This isn't some "ultimatum" and I'm not doing this to be dramatic. But I want to get feedback. So, I kindly ask for your response...

[Poll #193219]
To the Chicago Cubs and the Boston Red Sox, with love. You have the greatest fans in the world, the most charming ballparks in baseball and are both heading to the World Series! All you need now are tickets.

Seriously, what's up with that curse business? The Cubs have had a curse since 1945. Ok, that may be true but how does THAT curse explain them not winning since 1908?

And the Red Sox. Well, there is the [livejournal.com profile] affleck curse there. This is what happens when a Boston fan starts getting some Boo-Tay from the Boogie Down Bronx.

To Steve Bartman, With Love. The Chicago papers printed your picture, they posted the name of the company you work for and visited your childhood home. This, after you touched that foul ball that ruined the Cubs' chances of winning the Pennant. You have to love the dedication those newshounds in Chi-town have to dig up the important stories! Responsible journalism at its finest! Hea hea! Seriously, don't you have to join the witness relocation program? I'm guessing an Extreme Queer Eye Makeover is in order here. See you in South Beach, Stevy! Fab-oo!

To Pedro Martinez, With Love. You were incredible during that ALCS. No one threw like you. Unfortunately, that was just Don Zimmer. You should have saved those tosses for the game! No. Really, Pedro, you have nothing to be ashamed about. You can always look back on this series and say "I beat a Yankee." A 72 year-old Yankee. Nice job!

To The New York Yankees, With Love. 39 Pennants. Wow, huh? No other sports team is even close to the record you have. Don't forget to thank the aptly named Brian CASHMAN for helping to bring together the best team MONEY CAN BUY. Now it's the Marlins and Yankees. Woo. We were all looking forward to THAT one.

The great thing now is we can all start focusing on the NBA season a little sooner.

Proud of you.
This is sort of a relaxed week. We've got a vacation coming up right before November Sweeps begins, so everyone is taking it a bit easy now so we'll have a lot of energy and fun saved up for those all important shows next month.

Not a lot to tell you, really, Just counting the days until the NBA season begins. It should be a very good year.

I was thinking about posting all of my wry commentary and my clever jokes about things in my [livejournal.com profile] late_late_show journal, and leaving this one for more personal matters, and more positive comments. Haven't decided about that, but I hate to see that other journal wasting away out there. We haven't had a chance to do new episodes of the AIM/LJ version of the program. This might be a way to get some sort of use out of it now.

Or, who knows? Maybe there'll be another opportunity to get more use out of it in its originally intended method someday...

Have a fantastic week!

"Hola, Cal-Leaf-Or-Ny-Yah, Bay-Bee."

Waste.

Oct. 5th, 2003 10:44 pm
I'm back at home. I feel like taking a week off after this weekend. But that isn't how it works.

So, the Twins came up short. Another great effort ruined by The Best Team Money Can Buy. And what did I have to show for it? An autographed baseball, and a weekend spent with my parents. ESPN didn't even show me leading the "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" singalong, those jealous bastards! I'll show it on the program.

Special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] taralipinski and [livejournal.com profile] katie__heigl, for the extra taunting! Okay, we know the Yankees won. Congratulations.

At least the Vikings won their game. They're undefeated! Could this be the Purple People Eaters' year to go all the way? I don't even want to think... all those years of coming so close and failing...

Let's change the subject, shall we? This week on the program, it's all about THURSDAY. That's because it's all about DIDO.

She's back, she's performing, she's fantastic. Her new album, "Life For Rent" is lovely. Go out and pick up your copy right away. Just thinking about it makes me a bit happier.

And there is the NBA season, just a few days from starting! I've been hanging with the T'wolves. Okay, so they may not have the highest payroll in the league, but they do have a shot at a great year. I'll have more about that on the show this week, too. You won't want to miss my report from training camp. That will be awesome.

I'm ready to forget about baseball season. It's dead to me now. It's basketball. Now, and forever.

I'm going to go feel sorry for myself and listen to Dido.
So, today's the big day. Yankees and Twins. Game time: 3pm Central. That's 4pm Eastern and 12 Noon Pacific. Since the A's and Red Sox didn't finish their series last night, you may have to tune in to ESPN2 if their game isn't over before ours starts. Watch for me!

The family got up and decided to have brunch at the International House of Pancakes. I have to wonder about a meal that serves up six regular sized pancakes, eggs, sausage, ham AND bacon, all on one plate. The only thing Dad needed was a screwdriver to make it complete.

It's always such a great time to go out in public with the parents. We run into their friends who invariably ask: "So, what are you doing with your life?" There's are issues about everything, from what I eat to how I shave to the fact that I'm not married, YET. Well, there's an excellent chance that I'll never be married. Deal with it, people.

Right now, I'm going to watch the beginning of the Vikings/Falcons game from Atlanta. Hopefully, it'll be the Vikes fifth win of the year, and will be an omen for the baseball game later.

Frustration

Oct. 4th, 2003 11:24 pm
Okay. It was bad enough that I had to come home and dine with my parents this weekend, but then the Twins lost to the Yankees!

Let's start with the parents. Personally, I have to say eating a Thanksgiving style dinner for no reason than that I came home isn't great for my training regimen. How am I supposed to stay in shape for the T'wolves?

But then the Twins lost?

Now, they won't be able to clinch tomorrow, when I'm singing "Take Me Out To The Ball Game." At least, I hope they can get it back to Yankee Stadium. Not in our house! That's my motto.

My dad wants tickets to the game too. I'm going to get him seats down behind the dugout, so I can watch the game from the booth in peace. I've got my earplugs because it's louder than a jet engine in the Metrodome, and I sort of need to be able to hear when I get back to the show next week!

Here's hoping the rest of your weekend goes the way you want.

Unless you're a Yankee fan.
[livejournal.com profile] g_gershon made her first appearance of her two appearances on The Late Late Show last night. You knew I was going to look at her Maxim Magazine layout. She was great about it, but somehow, she didn't want to do any of the poses from the periodical. Then again, The CBS censors wouldn't have let her anyhow.

Tonight, we're going to hear Gina rock out, so you really have to tune in for that! It's Friday... and all I want to do is dance. Dance. DANCE... to Gina!

The only thing that spoiled the day was the Yankees, who evened the series with the Twins. But, it means I will be leading the singing of "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" during the 7th Inning Stretch during Game Four of the ALDS on Sunday.

But more importantly is the big workout with the Minnesota Timberwolves! I'm getting geared up for the day... did some lifting, stretching, and running. We'll have plenty of footage to show of me making a fool of myself on the court. It may be the biggest laughs on the show this year.

On the better side, Ben and Jen seem to have patched things up, and Courtney Love got arrested! At least the monologue will be easy for the next couple of shows!

Have a wonderful friday and don't miss Gina tonight!
So, yeah... I'm going to go to Timberwolves Training Camp next week! For those of you who don't know, that's an NBA team. And for those of you who don't know, NBA stands for National Basketball Association. I'll be out on the court with KJ and Latrell... this should be very interesting. I doubt I'll see much action, but this is going to be something. A chance to utilize my scrimmage abilities, test my range from beyond the arc in game conditions.

Of course, I'll have a full report about it on the show.

Meanwhile! Report from the Bronx: The little old Minnesota Twins have managed to upend the mighty New York Yankees! And in a best of 5 series, getting a 1-0 lead is huge, especially on the road!

Things are really looking up!

Don't forget about [livejournal.com profile] l_remini on tonight's CBS telecast!

Proud of you.
Call it "Goodness Gracious" Week. [livejournal.com profile] g_gershon gets not one but TWO appearances on the CBS version of the show this week. But, I'm getting ahead of myself.

We've got The Rock! And Amber Tamblyn, who I thought had a journal... once... Now, she's got a prime time series: "Joan Of Arcadia!" It's a long way from "General Hospital." They both are on Monday.

Tuesday, one of my favorites... The firecracker! The Sparkplug... the about to be married Leah Remini. What happened to her LJ? I guess she's got a lot to do, being the consort to the King of Queens.

Eva Mendes. We've been waiting a long while for this! That's Wednesday.

But we always save the best for last.

On Thursday, Our delightful Gina comes in for a chat about her new project which took Sundance by storm this past winter: "Prey For Rock & Roll." Val Kilmer will also be in to discuss what it was like playing a porn star... and also all about his new film, too!

Gina comes again on Friday! And you definitely don't want to miss that performance. Rock on, Gina. We have Maxim Magazine layouts to examine.

Feel free to tune in to the Friday show, AFTER Ray Romano gets done.

As you can tell, it's just great guests all week long! So, spread the good word! ;)
Some of us didn't go partying last night. Some of us weren't invited. Some of us didn't need to go partying, since some of us weren't nominated!

But the point is that some very wonderful and deserving people won Emmys last night, so I salute them. Me, I shun awards and award ceremonies. Okay, I did host the TV Guide Awards and there was a reference to that in one of the 15 Brad Garrett bits they ran during the show last night. And I did present a People's Choice Award ONE TIME.

It's so much cooler to NOT be there. To have people miss you. It's like when [livejournal.com profile] parkerposey deletes, then comes back. I get the draw. You miss her, and then she reappears! That's cooler than being as predictable as getting nominated every year, like some sort of Soprano.

So, I'm ready to begin the new day, the new week, a new year of doing some of the best television on television! You can reward it, or award it or watch it or don't even watch it! I'll still be there.

Tonight: THE BANGLES! How's that for a great musical guest? Seann William Scott who is doing a great new film "The Rundown." And if that wasn't enough, Dr. Drew will be there too; I'm trying to remember what lovely actress told me she had a crush on him. Tune in to that show! It will make you laugh.
I just wanted to say congrats to [livejournal.com profile] debra_messing for her Best Actress in a Comedy Emmy Win!

Hey!

I know I have been shirking my responsibility around here, but it's a busy time! Fresh shows, first time guests... the Fall Season! Of course, my upcoming weekend will be completely free, seeing as I won't be attending any awards ceremonies.

But I do need to salute my Late Night rival, Conan O'Brien, for being on for ten years. That's quite an accomplishment. Hopefully I'll look as good when I turn ten.

On to the stuff happening this week on CBS! "Survivor" is coming back this Thursday and we'll have Jeff Probst on to talk about some of the intricacies of the Pearl Islands edition of the show. That'll be on Tuesday.

The lovely and talented [livejournal.com profile] leona_naess will drop by to perform on Wednesday. Maybe this will be important enough to get her to update?

Seal will close out the week with a tune from his new album Friday...

But Monday (a.k.a. TONIGHT)! We've got Kate Beckinsale! Donny Osmond! and Cheap Trick!!! You have to admit, that's a fantastic show.

I'm all about doing nothing but quality work so that the NEXT time there's some big awards ceremony, I won't have to watch it in my robe with a box of bon bons on the side, and my face in a mud mask.

Hey... I can dream!
Andy [livejournal.com profile] roddick is your 2003 US Open Men's Champion!

Proud of you Andy! And what a way to ace out the match. That's style and class right there. I predict a lot more hardware for the mantle in the years to come! Nice job. [livejournal.com profile] stiles_j was beside herself.

I got caught up on all the sports during the flight... did the Houston Texans really beat MIAMI???

The Yankees beat BOSTON???

I'm back home now, back to Los Angeles, and ready to start the Fall season.

Some of the more important guests to watch out for in our first week back include:

Juliette Lewis on Monday, Willie Mays (he's the godfather of Barry Bonds) on Tuesday, and Loni Anderson, who is the star of a show called "Mullets." I didn't even know there was a show called "Mullets." Maybe I could go on as a guest star?

I'm actually eager to get back to it. I've missed you.

Have a great season everyone!
Is it just me, or is Haley Joel Osment turning into John Tesh?

Give a cheer for Andy [livejournal.com profile] roddick! He made it to the 2003 US Open Finals, a remarkable accomplishment in itself, especially considering his very young age.

I'm only half watching the women's final right now from the CBS box, since what could really follow that match last night!

Anyway, since Andy is in the final, I'll stay and catch the 10pm flight back to the coast tomorrow night. The match better be over by then, Andy! And you better win, my friend. I'm not staying to watch the Spanish guy take the title.

Meanwhile, I think I'll see if I can grab a late supper in town, then get ready for the kickoff of the NFL season right before Andy's match. This is my favorite time of year!

Proud.
Justine Henin-Hardenne made an incredible effort to beat Jen Capriati. I know Matt Perry wasn't pleased, but it was the match of the tournament. How the final can be half as good, I don't know.

So, the sun came out today, it was almost as lovely as a day in the Hollywood Hills, here in NYC.

Now that I'm about to leave for home, everything is turning nice. Ah well.

I have to see of Agassi and Roddick make it to the finals. It should be a Super Saturday at the Open. And the best part is the tickets are provided by CBS.

The View

Sep. 3rd, 2003 01:38 pm
Okay, I admit it. I wound up doing "The View." It was actually better than I thought it was going to be.

I was most concerned about Star Jones, who we have done endless jokes about over the years. But we buried the hatchet, I think. She really, truly is a "Daytime Diva," and I think we made our peace, even though she was giving me the evil eye, wouldn't hug hello and asked me "what do you do when you don't like the guest you have on." Not exactly the warmest reception! I guess this means I can't do any more Star jokes. *sigh*

Well, she is getting her stomach stapled, so now is as good a time to give 'em up as any!

It was very nice meeting Meredith, though. And is Jessica Simpson stalking me? I had her on the show twice in two weeks, and she was the other guest on this View ep.

The women were all very lively and I suspect they're going to bring in Rachel Campos as the new co-host, since they almost hired her before (and didn't because she was pregnant). Did I do my research? You betcha!

Anyway, the key is staying low key. I survived "The View." I can pretty much survive ANYTHING.
Just like a couple of years ago, I have made the cross country trek to NYC to see (I had hoped) a few matches at the US Open, do some shopping, catch up with some of my East Coast friends and visit a couple of very nice restaurants.

Can I say New York is very depressing? Not gorgeous. Not sunny. Not Hollywood. It's raining and gray and cold and as far as sports go around here, there's not a lot of hope in any case. There are the local baseball teams, one that is going to post season, the other that is going nowhere. There are the two football teams and neither seem prepared for the season. And don't even start with basketball here. People don't even seem to know what that is!

I plan to attempt to enjoy my time here despite all.

You can catch me on tomorrow night's edition of "Late Show With David Letterman," my annual appearance. Maybe I'll swing by one of my favorite lesser known eateries... Veritas. They have the best wine list in town and the food is fantastic.

It is nice to get away from the whole California Recall Election issues, and watch the people dealing with percipitation issues... something that never happens in Los Angeles.

I'll be back to LA next week. For now, I have some promotion to do. The CBS Top Brass wants me to help out with that. New shows, like "CSI: New Orleans" and "Naval N-CSI" starring Mark Harmon, and "CSI: Becker." And that "Joan of Arcadia!" Finally, a replacement for "Touched By An Angel!"

See you at the junket.
