For Milla... And For Anyone Who Loves

I have a very dear friend. Her name is [livejournal.com profile] milla_jovovich. She is remarkable in many ways, but one of the most amazing things about her is her romantic nature and her deep capacity to care about the people she loves.

She has found someone special who means a great deal to her. His name is [livejournal.com profile] ian_somerhalder, and she is as happy as I've ever seen her.

The thing about love is: There are no absolutes. There could be love at first sight. It could be hate that turns into respect and then love. It could be a mutual flirtation that becomes deeper over time.

The point is, there's no one way to do it. It's as unique as the two persons involved and as foreign as the people on the outside looking at it.

Loving is one of the greatest experiences in life. When you find a person who makes you feel special, it's akin to finding the Holy Grail, or seeing a team other than the Lakers win the Championship. It's very rare indeed.

So, when you find someone who moves you that way... who gives you what you need physically, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually... nothing else matters. The opinions of others are as meaningless as the carbon dioxide they exhale when they speak them. It's all about you two. The rest of the world can look on in askance, arms akimbo, ready to scold.

And when you find someone who touches your heart in such a way, aren't they worth fighting for? Would you really give up someone based simply on someone else's opinion?

Clearly, when you enter into a new relationship, it changes the nature of all of the others you currently have. That can be threatening to your friends, or create jealousy for your rivals.

No, sometimes being selfish is the correct choice. So to Milla, I wish you more of what you already have. And to Ian, whom I am just getting to know, I'll try not to be jealous!
