I had a special plan for [livejournal.com profile] debra_messing's Valentine's party. It was highly orchestrated and maybe overly complicated.

I was one of the first to arrive, since whenever I'm late, I'm on time. I know... it's not good generally, but in this case, I was able to help with the completion of the decorations, and just puttering around the food.

I brought my spicy guacamole dip, and I also brought a couple of people... namely Danny Bonaduce and Shirley Jones, two members of The Partridge Family, one of Deb's favorite shows from years ago. She was genuinely shocked that Shirley and Danny were hanging out in her kitchen. The look on her face was priceless!

Actually, Danny and she got along really well, except he was constantly asking her to appear on that Dick Clark "View For Guys" show. I haven't seen it. Is it really bad or just mediocre?

Danny and Shirley both had other engagements, so they didn't stay more than an hour or so, and left before the party really got going. Too bad, because they missed out on my other surprises.

I had a shipment of roses sent up right before most of the rest of the guests arrived. I don't know. Was twelve dozen excessive? They were meant to be sort of party favors, so that everyone could take home one.

Later, my other surprise arrived, special delivery...

Lenny Kravitz dropped in to do a mini concert! He's gearing up to start a world tour, (it begins in Japan in April, I think) and he played a remarkable version of "My Cherie Amour," the old Stevie Wonder tune. I wonder if he'll put that on an album?

Debra was really floored, since she didn't have a hint that I was going to do any of this!

Then, in the midst of the guests, the music, the food and drink, in the midst of the night, the sky, the stars, the city, the rose pedals, our lips touched, the dancing, the laughing, the night. This night.

The party was pretty lively, thanks to Deb playing social butterfly and making sure everyone was cared for. She's a great hostess! And she sang a great "I Will Survive," during a karaoke set, well after Lenny left and well after much imbibing!

Should I have stayed longer... I don't know. I'm kind of a turtle sometimes when it comes to this sort of thing. I move at molasses pace and I tend to withdraw into my shell if things get too much.

But maybe this has already happened...? Slow and steady...

I'm sure I'll go back over on Sunday afternoon to help with the clean up.
